MR LYAN’S TASTE TRIPS: EPISODE ONE

Japan: The pursuit of perfection

Visiting one of Ryan’s favourite countries, we tell a story that is personal to Ryan and dives into details that are lesser known, of a country that is many peoples’ dream destination.

Within the drinks and food world in Japan there is an incredible ability to take inspiration from the rest of the world and put a unique spin on it – we visit the birthplace of Japanese whisky, Suntory’s Yamazaki Distillery, as an example of this. And in turn, Japan has deeply influenced the rest of the world.

Japanese cuisine itself is UNESCO-listed, therefore as important as the Taj Mahal or Petra.

In this episode we see an example of the Japanese art of fermentation – a family shoyu brewery, who have been making the seasoning since the 1800s. Karaoke, the best pizza place in the world, Nishiki market in Kyoto, and some of the world’s most expensive fruit, is also featured. We create both a non-alcoholic and alcoholic cocktail, as in every episode, inspired by the ingredients and places Ryan visits.

With each episode we feature a number of deep dives and special focus videos – from how to make the perfect ice for a highball, to the best buys in a Japanese convenient store. Here are two of our favourite:
